SCTT: maybe try running away
girlboss discourse, vacation behavior & a new era of celeb empires
Knock knock! Whose there?? VACATION, HO!!! Both of us boarded flights this weekend to our summer escapes. KT is posted up in Martha’s Vineyard for the week and MP fled to Amsterdam until who knows when. And some time away could not be more on time. And while you’re probably sick of us talking about Mercury Retrograde fear not!! It is most likely OVER by the time you’re reading this. Let us all take a moment of gratitude because PHEW, the last few weeks have been drama, drama, drama. And may we suggest that you (like us) run away from it all for a little? Seems healthy. Don’t tell our therapists we said that.
As always, we’re so glad you’re here with us. And, if you’re new here, this is structured chaos tailored trends (SCTT bc who has time for all that): a weekly report of top of mind trends, shifts in culture & curated recommendations.
the structure
8am tennis lessons
touching down in your happy place
filming 3 hrs of content even with a bad-itude
repotting plants (so we don’t end up like Mariah)
allowing Sundays to be for rest (Netflix and Netflix only)
a therapy breakthrough on the difference between being perceived vs understood
the chaos
packing the same day your flight leaves
eating Erewhon coconut soft serve for lunch
seriously considering bringing your cat to europe with you
law roach bringing back cut throat critiques on Project Runway
sabrina carpenter bringing out earth, wind, & fire at lollapalooza
being so gullible you believe the car inspection guy when he says there’s a cat stuck under it
this week’s motto
“Other people’s opinions of you are none of your business” - Ru Paul
Now this one takes TIMEEEE to truly believe it. But once you do embody it, wow is it freeing. Unstoppable, even. Able to conquer all of the fears holding you back - especially the ones that relate to being seen and putting yourself out there. And, ultimately, you can’t control how people perceive you (which, we now know, is different than people understanding you 😉)
conscious consumption menu:
🤖 Networth & Chill with Lucy Guo: A podcast episode with the youngest self-made billionaire? yes please! This episode dives into Lucy’s life, how she built Scale AI (which led her to become a billionaire). She also gets real about how she’s navigated years of building a top AI start up and her path to pivoting to build a platform for creators.
📆 Daily habit tracker: Our friend Dellara recently released a free one page habit tracker to create daily structure around the things that make you feel good in these chaotic times
🎧 Metroboomin: creating a 00s nostalgia album for the A&F / Hollister girlies is a public service
💚 Cutting Room Floor with Morgan Stewart: First, if you have not signed up to the TCRF Patreon, it’s a must. second, if you’re an OG E! watcher (RIP E! News) then you’ll loveee hearing our girl Morgan Stewart on the pod. she shows a more vulnerable side (family trauma + tears happen in the first 10 minutes) and her hilarious self awareness never stops being entertaining.
by Perez: Our girl is constantly dropping career advice gems and we loved her recent guide on how to get “good” at money. It’s a must read for anyone in their building wealth generation era.
🪩 Renaissance: It’s been 3 years since Beyonce graced us with this album, and with ever listen, it’s only gets better. driving with the windows down and blasting Alien Superstar in Martha’s Vineyard reminded us why the album keeps sneaking into our top 3 albums in her discography.
📽️ A Real Pain: the movie selection on KLM was truly garbage but this movie had been on MP’s need to watch list. nothing hits quite like a complex family drama and this one did not disappoint. plus, if you’re a Succession fan it’s quite a treat to get to watch Kieran Culkin on screen again.
trends we’re spotting:
🤩 celebrities bets outside of CPG: If you might have noticed, most celebrity brands are in the world of CPG (consumer packaged goods). Think energy drinks, spirits, candy, snack foods, sauces, beauty, etc. But recently a new trend is emerging of celebrities venturing beyond a physical product that we think will continue to grow. Enter: celeb founded creative agencies and media empires. This week news broke that Kendrick Lamar is launching a creative agency which joins the OG’s like Lebron James’ Uninterrupted, Michael B. Jordan’s Obsidian Works and Naomi Osaka’s Hana Kuma. And it’s not just major celebs - more and more creators are launching media platforms vs. CPG brands to scale.
🩴 designer flip flops: we simply can’t get on board, despite this article confirming their spot as “shoe of the summer.” while we expect celebrities to walk around in $890 flip flops because they don’t know how much things should cost, everyone else simply looks silly. even if you do have the money, it can (and should) be much better spent! if you want quality leather flip flops, do yourself a favor and stick with these label-free alternatives. they still look luxe and won’t make your bank account roll its eyes at you.
🏁 luxe leather racing jackets: MP saw F1 this week and is 1. now invested in racing and 2. wants to dress like it. while product placement in films is nothing new, the marketing of the car brands prominently featured (notably BMW, Porsche, Lamborghini) was extremely effective. and, with the rise of celeb heavy brand events at F1, it’s just a matter of time before we see more jackets inspired by the track heading down the runway. now, if the above brands are savvy, they’ll get on it, like, yesterday, to really own the trend. otherwise, we’ll be waiting on Prada to deliver for us again.
💅🏽 the return of the girlboss?: think pieces, abound! no matter your opinion on the topic, there is no denying that the topic is yet again hot. both Bloomberg and the Broadsheet ran features this week on the founders formerly known as girl bosses. we, of course, have a lot of thoughts. plus, MP had a front row seat to the 2020 start up takedown. can you guess what our next deep dive is on??
magazines 🫱🏼🫲🏽 movie sets: InStyle’s recent made-for-social series ‘The Intern’ is brilliant. it is a perfect example of innovating in a struggling industry. casting influencers to dramatize the fashion intern experience is inextricably linked to the concept’s success. you can tell that the people behind the scenes are letting them do their thing, which is leading to content that is genuinely entertaining. we expect the others to try to follow suit soon…
